On Sat., Dec. 15, District 1 met at the Topeka & Shawnee Co. Public Library, where attendees signed up to share their writing with each other as a "first-time-ever" critique event. Writers passed out copies of what they'd brought to read, then took turns reading the work and inviting others to evaluate and offer suggestions for improvements to the writing. Ten readers signed up and shared, including two first-time attendees. Our thanks go to outgoing district president, Duane Johnson, for photographing the readers' group. Also, our thanks go to incoming president, Janet Stotts, who strewed our tables with Christmas treats!
Again, in 2018, Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library hosted a day for local writers to sell published books at the library on Sat., Dec. 8. Photos are by Fred Appelhanz, D-1, and collage is by Carol Yoho, D-1. Five Kansas Poets Laureates (past and present) took part: Caryn Mirriam-Goldberg, Wyatt Townley, Kevin Rabas (present), Eric McHenry and Denise Low. KAC members present included Barbara Waterman-Peters, Fred Appelhanz, Reaona Hemmingway, Sandi Smith, Toni Scalia, Stacy Thowe, Janet Stotts, Duane Johnson, Tracy Million-Simmons, and Cathy Callen.
Three District 1 members took part in the NOTO Topeka "First Friday" event, seated indoors at Studio 831. Participants were Barbara Waterman-Peters (artist/writer and manager of Studio 831), Duane Johnson (poet/recent D1 president) and Fred Appelhanz (poet/musician).
