Present at this hybrid meeting: Anne Spry, Duane Herrmann, Stacy Kohbee, Fred Applehanz, Rhonda Miller, Barbara Waterman-Peters, Barbara Brady, Aimee Gross, Duane Johnson, Ruth Maus, Carol Yoho, and Max Dunavan.
We met in person at the Shawnee County Public Library and with Zoom participants included.
Part 1 Program:
Anne Spry delivered a presentation on “Memoirs and Legacy Writing.” Her company developed materials and on site participants received a free sample copy and Zoom participants can be provided the packet by requesting one from Anne. Anne urges writers to leave a record their lives life for descendants and people in the future who will want to know about your life and times. She provided working definitions of memoirs, biographies, and legacy writing. Her Memoir Kit includes prompts and identifies how to use and preserve memories, artifacts and the importance of using a chronological order in biographies and legacy writings. Anne shared copies of the memoirs she has produced for others as well as books published by other authors as models. Memoirs can include poetry, prose, diary and journal entries as well as pictures/photographs, handwriting, favorite recipes, and interests, hobbies and projects. One participant suggested “The Book of Myself” to assist with memoir writing. Ask relatives what they would want to know about the family or about you to get writing prompts. Also memoirs may also be recorded video which can be quite rich in details.
The program topic resulted in lively participation and discussion.
The club progressed to the read around and seven people had prose and poetry readings to share. Additionally, Ronda Miller announced several projects she is pursuing and offered to send links if anyone is interested. One is a National Land Trust poet opportunity and another for writing histories on various sites in Kansas and the rest of the nation. If you have knowledge or interest in historical research, you might contact Rhonda.

Committee Reports:
Open Mic Committee: Duane J., Anne, and Max provided an update. We have a tentative starting date of April 20 and discussed a name for the event. Duane is investigating venues and we are seeking to begin with an online program, and moving to hybrid as quickly as possible. One name was suggested by the committee and after discussion the name “Words in the Wind” was selected and voted on by members. As there are several details we’re still working on, the membership passed a motion granting the committee authority to make decisions and proceed. Max made the motion and the motion was modified by Duane H and Barb B. The vote was affirmed unanimously.
Anthology Committee: Max and Barbara met and determined the order for our tasks. Members may now begin looking for writing to submit and may soon expect reminders and encouragement to submit entries for the District 1 anthology.
Adjournment: 2:40 P.M. Look for the announcement for the April 16th meeting as a hybrid meeting.
