District 1's October program, to be held at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, 2nd floor, on Sat., Oct. 20, 2018, will be a Read-Around, including those winning awards from the KAC Literary Contest at the State Convention (held Oct. 5-7, 2018 in Salina, KS). At the Read-Around anyone may read (or recite) for up to five minutes. Plan now to attend.
Speaker at the District 1 September meeting was Randall Martin, who spoke on "Mystery Writing." Randall is a past president of District 1. He has worked at Forbes Air Force Base and in Saudi Arabia. His focus has been on flash fiction mystery writing. His very informative talk explained the difference between suspense and mystery, detailing the elements of each. He also entertained with readings from his repertoire of flash fiction stories.
Friday evening, Sept. 4, District 1 members were given permission by member Barbara Waterman-Peters to set up tables outside her Studio 831 business for NOTO's First Friday Art Walk.
This was the first time authors have gathered in NOTO Arts District to merchandise their writing. Outdoor photo includes Wanda Bukmer, Fred Appelhanz, Reaona Hemmingway, Duane Herrmann, Duane Johnson and Janet Stotts. D1 member Carol Yoho took the photos. After some exciting outdoor events, including a drum line, it started to rain. Barbara welcomed authors to come indoors and stay dry for the rest of the evening. It was a fun, social occasion. Thank you, Barbara! |
