Recent D1 MEETING: Sat., May 20, 2017
Archaeologist/author Susan Holland and her photographer/technology assistant Mike Rooney spoke about “Rattlesnakes, Fluteplayers and Sandhill Cranes.”
Susan Holland originally had no intention to publish her book, Symbolism of Petroglyphs and Pictographs Near Mountainair, New Mexico, the Gateway to Ancient Cities, but over a period of 40 years, each step fell into place to keep her going. Fate seemed to be in charge. Hours of researching written records by early southwestern ethnologist provided the connections between petroglyphs and pictographs symbols and their meaning.
Once again, fate stepped in when she needed publishable images for the book by introducing Mike Rooney into her life. Without his outstanding photography, and other help, this book would not have been possible. This presentation included 33 pictures of symbols used in petroglyphs and pictographs, all photos taken on-site by Mike.
The challenge of locating a publisher was solved by self-publishing an edition of the book, which Susan used to attract production of a professional edition in 2016.
