Present online were Duane Johnson, Anne Spry, Max Dunavan, Janet Stotts, Carol Yoho, Barb Brady, Audrey Bosley, Roger Droz, Ruth Maus, Fred Applehanz, Duane Herrmann, and Aimee Gross.
Program by Anne Spry on Vision, Goal Setting and tools to help writers produce better results. Anne identified the two types of writers. The “Pansters and the Plotters,” defining both categories and their personal styles. Pansters fly by the seat of their pants and go with the flow when it comes to their writing, but may find some of the more formal writing techniques and planning strategies more helpful. A number of strategies, planning tools, and websites were discussed and shared with participants. There are all sorts of personality assessments available for persons who might find those helpful in identifying their strengths and weaknesses as it might relate to their writing. In depth information was outlined on planning, laying out story boards, goal setting, blocking time to write, avoiding distractions, as well as realistic and measurable writing goals. Spry shared ideas that included having a writing buddy, mentor, someone to talk to about ways to improve your story line and the hard skills in editing and eventual layout and publishing. We looked at traditional story writing and were encouraged to identify our reader audience, themes, hooks and ploys, and any added content we wanted to include. Time was provided for questions.
Meeting: The Secretary’s report by Max (Myron) Dunavan was approved on a motion by Duane Herrmann, seconded by Aimee Gross and approved as printed in the newsletter.
Treasurer’s Report: Reaona Hemmingway couldn’t be with us today, but sent information to Anne that there were no changes. As it appears that a check was sent by the state board in December, Anne will be following- up to assure that we have received that check.
New Business: We watched part of a video on the KAC YouTube about the website as given by Tracy Million Simmons at the convention last year. Members were encouraged to bookmark and refer to the site often, now simply Kansasauthors.org. There is a great deal on the site, including ways for members to add information about local and author events and to share their publishing or other successes. District #1’s own web page is undergoing some dramatic improvements so be sure to check it out as well
2021 Conference planning is undergoing some natural changes and there will be a Friday evening read-around and socializing. A committee also reviewed the program and various needs with the convention hotel this past Wednesday. The program committee is still meeting and a budget and financing committee is beginning to meet and contact individuals and groups to help with registration and welcoming goodie bags. Various funding sources and grants were discussed briefly. Barbara Brady shared several ideas on donors.
Guests: it was clarified that if a member desires to send an invitation to a guest that has a special interest in a program or who may want to join Kansas Author’s club, they may share the monthly meeting Zoom link. Please proceed on your own as Anne would prefer not to be a middleman for the invitation.
The state offices are rum by volunteers and they are doing their best to keep up with the demand. Anne now has some administrator’s rights to download and copy information that may assist with keeping our local district membership more accurate.
If you did not pay your dues in December, please do, so your membership is not disrupted and you continue to get the meeting and program notices.
Membership and marketing will meet Tuesday at 9:00 a.m., and convention program and budget will be meeting soon. Additional monthly program and speaker contacts have been identified.
Ruth shared that The Birdie Poetry Awards will be announcing winners at their Tuesday Award ceremony. Go online to register for the Zoom event.
Max has a Zoom meeting with Arts Connect Monday relative to being a “partner” with KAC District #1.
The meeting was adjourned at 2:58 p.m.
