Present: Myron (Max) Dunavan, Janet Stotts, Carol Yoho, Anne Spry, Ruth Maus, Fred C. Appelhanz, Duane Herrmann, Julie Sellers, Keith S., Roger D., Barbara Brady, and Reaona Hemmingway
President Stotts called the meeting to order at 1:05 pm.
Secretary’s Report: The Secretary’s report was considered as submitted by Myron (Max) Dunavan and posted to the District One website. It was moved, seconded, and approved as published, by participant vote.
Treasurer’s Report: The report was given my Reaona Hemmingway. We have had no income and no expenditures since we last met at the library in September 2020, so there were no changes to District 1's current balance. The report was moved to accept, seconded and approved by participant vote.
Update on the 2020 "virtual" KAC Annual Conference, hosted by District 6 & 7: Those attending had positive things to say about the conference format and speakers. The 2021 Ramada Topeka Downtown Conference will be hosted by District 1. Contract paperwork has been signed and sent back to the hotel. This information resulted in a general discussion of the pros and cons of an in-person versus video conference for the 2021 conference. President Stotts asked that members consider and provide conferences concerns, preferences and so forth for the next meeting in November.
Those involved with making the 2020 conference a success indicated there was a lot of work with technicians and so forth. There was question about “Book Room” sales and its profitability for the conference. The response is that the virtual book room resulted in no income to the conference, as all sales were only for books with online presence and those were handled through other purchase websites. The program committee was urged to think big to make this a conference that would draw participants. Funding and the conference methodology can be better accommodated once the program and speakers begin to come together. Potentially canceling contracts will require other attention.
Old Business: Included the announcement about dues and the 2020 election of new officers.
Dues are now due at $35 for annual membership for most members. Other rates are also available for students and so forth. The KAC membership tab, https://kansasauthorsclub.weebly.com/membership--benefits.html, allows you to print the form to complete and mail with your payment as per provided instructions, or to pay by credit card on-line. Remember that part of those dues come back to District 1 to assist with our local expenditures, and we can expect higher costs with hosting a conference this membership year. Some of the dues also help pay for use of the KAC State Zoom membership which we have used during the pandemic.
The chair of the nominating committee, Carol Yoho, presented the slate of officers. That slate was voted approved and voted on: Ann Spry as president, Ruth Maus as Vice President, Reaona Hemmingway as Treasurer, and Myron Dunavan as Recording Secretary.
*Note each member is to receive a copy of the meeting minutes monthly, because your participation and ideas are valued. Others may also receive copies of the minutes.
The business portion of the meeting ended at 1:45 pm.
The Program: followed the business meeting and was an opportunity for participants to hear from this year’s Kansas Author’s Club contest winners of prose and poetry writing competitions. District 1 has first, second, third place and honorable mentions from members and others within our area. Sharing their writings were Ruth, Julie, Jan, Keith and Max.
Plans for the next meeting will be announced by our new District 1 President Anne Spry. Watch for the e-mail and remember to check both the KAC State and District 1 web pages.
