Present: Anne Spry, Ruth Maus, Myron (Max) Dunavan, Janet Stotts, Carol Yoho, Fred C. Appelhanz, Duane Herrmann, Connie Michaelis, Barbara Brady, Amiee Gross, Duane Johnson, Roger D., Barbara Brady, and Reaona Hemmingway, Glory Hemmingway
Welcome: President Spry called the business meeting to order at 1:04 pm.
Secretary’s Report: The Secretary’s report was approved as submitted by Myron (Max) Dunavan and posted to the District One website. It was moved by Ruth and seconded by Amiee.
Treasurer’s Report: The Treasurer’s report was given by Reaona Hemmingway. We have had no income and no recent expenditures. The current balance has not changed for several months. The report was approved by general consensus.
Announcements: Anne spoke on the “81 word” writings opportunity of which Duane Herrmann alerted members. There is a deadline to be one of the first 900 submitters for participation.
Old Business: Janet advised that it is time to pay member dues. Please submit your payment through the website.
Committee Reports:
Program for 2021 Convention: Anne, Carol, Fred, and Duane J. have been working to finalize speakers and researching/reviewing the costs. Several potential speaker names were mentioned, but not yet finalized. The committee will meet with Anne to have that speaker list finalized in January, so Duane H and Max can proceed to research and obtain quotes for audio-video contractors.
Membership and marketing (Anne, Ruth and Max) discussed and developed strategies. Ruth advised that this committee was working on “value added” opportunities for current and potential new members, including an online
District 1 newsletter which would include member bio; initiating 3 additional categories of District 1 memberships, youth scholarships, sending out the quarterly list of programs, a District 1 anthology for paid members, and YouTube
channel for author/presentations and workshops targeted to training workshops, and establishing writing subgroups as appropriate. We also recommend a shorter business meeting with more time for program and enhancing the training of
members through writing skills development, technical skills and publishing training.
Max referred to the two motions which were in our recent mailing that would enable these activities to begin as printed below. Max additionally read motion 1 section B and C where there were wording changes for clarification. There was
interest in the motions and discussion. There were several comments that the membership may choose to revisit as we work through adding these components to District 1. Ruth moved that the motions as printed and clarified be approved, seconded by Duane J, and the membership approved these motions by a 6 to 1 vote.
A and B as read and incorporated into motion 1:
“B. Sponsors: any person or group which sponsors goods, services, or funds to promote KAC District 1 program events, including support of our annual conference, when District 1 hosts, would be listed in our online KAC District 1 directory for up to 12 months, given the opportunity to have their contact information, logo/name and brief paragraph in our online directory for 12 months, and they will be provided information regarding upcoming speaker events. Sponsors will be presented with a letter of acknowledgment and a one year “friend” membership.
C. Partners: Writing groups or other organizations with whom KAC District 1 partners to enhance the KAC District 1 experience for our members. Their business names would be listed in our online KAC District 1 directory web page for up to 12 months. Their names would be listed in our online KAC District 1 directory, mailing list, marketing brochures (print and online), and information regarding upcoming speaker events.”
The membership committee has already sent out a survey to query members on their program interests, possible speakers, member skills, speakers’ bureau interests, and potential members, program speakers, and sponsors.
The business meeting ended at 2:03 p.m.
Program: Our speaker was Connie Mason Michaelis, author and columnist. She presented an informative program regarding issues in publishing, a professional and personal story of why she writes, the methods and techniques of publishing,
including details of formatting, editing, printing, pricing, marketing and mailings of her book using local resources. She detailed information on the options available and considered them before self-publishing. Connie is an energetic and interesting speaker who took questions at the end of her presentation.
The meeting adjourned at 2:45 p.m.
