Because of the international Coronavirus-19 pandemic, the May 2020 District1 meeting was our first-ever VIRUTAL meeting online, via Zoom, hosted by KAC state president Duane Johnson and District 1 president Janet Stotts.
Present: Duane Johnson, Ruth Maus, Fred Applehanz, Janet Stotts, Carol Yoho, Duane Herrmann, Myron Dunavan, Ann Spry, and Sue Wike.
The business meeting was called to order at 1:05p.m. by Janet Stotts, who welcomed members.
Secretary’s Report: The Secretary’s minutes from our last meeting in March 2020 were posted to the website online. A motion made and seconded that we approve the minutes as posted. The motion passed unanimously.
Treasurer’s Report: The Treasurer was not present and provided no report, so we are awaiting that report. Jan advised that there had been no expenditures since the last meeting.
Old Business: The 2021 Conference Site Committee: Myron Dunavan provided an overview of the Committee and the site visits conducted in March. The committee narrowed the conference to the city of Topeka and then to the three conference hotels that might have the resources to host the conference and proceeded with contacts and visits/tours with the booking agents. Of the three only two were suitable, and of those one was superior with greater resources, Ramada Inn Downtown. We made a preliminary report and received several questions about the details. yron met with the agent at the Ramada in and clarified those. No down payment is required ahead of time and we can cancel within 30 days of the conference if, necessary. A motion was made to proceed with using the Ramada Inn Downtown and was approved. Myron is to make contact with the hotel to initiate reserving the date and get back to District One members. Audio visual needs are a separate contract not through the hotel.
Duane Johnson did clarify that if any KAC District needs to consider holding the conference not in a convention hotel (and there are reasons that might be necessary) they would have his backing.
New Business: Duane Johnson, State President of KAC advises that there is an opportunity to participate in a visioning and restructuring Committee for KAC being initiated, geared to help make reorganize KAC for the 21st century. He is looking for volunteers within and without KAC who may wish to participate.
There are plans being made to offer a 2020 KAC Webinar in lieu of a face to face convention during the Coronavirus pandemic.
The business meeting was closed.
Janet Stotts moved us into the program portions of our meeting. Each member present was given the opportunity to share their writings through readings. We were treated to short stories and poetry, including works in progress and poetry in process of being published. There were seven presenters who were allowed five minutes each.
After the readings the virtual Zoom KAC Districit 1 May meeting was adjourned.
