New Business:
A. Information from the State Board meeting:
A newsletter from the state board was sent out this past month. If you did not receive a copy, please let Janet Stotts know so we can make certain your name is on the e-mailing list.
Some of the smaller clubs have been meeting outdoors in parks practicing only social distancing. Do we want to do something of that nature. Some were open to meeting outside, others not, and there was no big push either way. It was determined that District 1 would continue a Zoom format a while longer. We may consider an outdoor October meeting.
After the October Conference the State Board will establish a youTube presence to reach more people.
Tracy Million-Simmons provided updated information of our 501(c)3 status and suggested the districts take a look at their mission statements to address being more inclusive. Janet invited District 1 members to review the Mission statements and make any suggestions.
2020 Conference registrations are open and the early bird rates $70 through September 1. After that date the rate jumps to $85. You can locate the Submittables Payment System on the KAC website or in the recent newsletter. This video conference will be an interactive conference with the ability to ask questions of the speakers. Book Sellers Note: There will be a “virtual” book room where one can list, market, share and sell books as well.
The State Board combined the membership rates for persons age 25 and under into one lower rate to lower the cost of membership and encourage participation for college age writers.
The board has provided language that perhaps enables the district clubs to set up scholarships, or stipends for persons who can’t afford membership.
B. Myron Dunavan advised that he could use additional children’s books for the small neighborhood lending libraries, as those are always needed.
Old Business:
A. Districts 1’s 2021 Kansas Author’s Club Conference is planned as an on-site conference in Topeka, hosted at the Downtown Ramada as a two day conference the 2nd weekend of October, 2021.
B. Theme Committee: Two themes were presented and discussed. These were discussed at the July and August meetings, and today we voted to select “Writing through Difficulty,” a take-off on the state’s motto.
C. We will introduce the theme and prepare a marketing welcome to give at the October 2020 conference. Various ideas were discussed and each member is asked/tasked to identify a type of difficulty (broadly or specifically) and prepare a brief. Those statements go to Anne Spry at “personalchapters@gmail” ASAP. We are also asked to prepare or locate a meme (picture with words) that captures the essence of the difficulty and send those to Janet at “[email protected],” also ASAP. That means members should start this week so the group can have your ideas, so we can work on and finalize this task at Septembers meeting. Anne Spry has volunteered her technical services to assist. Thanks Ann.
Business meeting adjourned at 2:00 p.m.
Program: The member-provided program was to present a humorous story or poem to the participants. There were 7 readers sharing (original or not) enjoyable readings to lighten the mood and encourage members to continue reading and writing.
