Present:Anne Spry, Duane Johnson, Max Dunavan, Janet Stotts, Fred Appelhanz, Aimee Gross, Barbara Waterman Peters, Reaona and Glory Hemmingway, Audrey Bosley and Steve and Rosie Williams.
Welcome from President Spry.
Program: Co-authoring planning and preparation by Steve and Rosie Williams’s presentation. If you missed the program, you can still catch it on the forthcoming YouTube link on the state KAC website. This compelling presentation was the first thing on Saturday’s agenda. Steve had stories from his experiences in Viet Nam and at the urging of family members he worked with wife Rosie a previously published author, to capture his experiences so they could be shared with others. Working on a book with another person is challenging in ways that are different from authoring your own book and there are several sets of ground rules. The Williamses described the types of interactions they had to bring the book into a finished project. Rosemary also provided several links to website articles that she recommends reading before entering into a co-authoring adventure. Those are https://:subscribmedia.com/how-to-co-author-book/ and https://selfpublishauthor.wordpress.com/tag/sample-co-author-contract- These sites provide the lists of factors co-authors should consider and gives examples of contracts that are very helpful in establishing the scope of the project. A big thanks to Steve and Rosie for enlightening us on another facet of authoring! Steve and Rosie will also be presenting as speakers for the Kansas Author’s Club annual convention in Topeka the second weekend in October.
Business Meeting
The Secretary’s report: was submitted by Max Dunavan and entered on both the web page and was available on the monthly newsletter. The motion to accept was made and seconded. The minutes were approved.
The Treasurer’s report: was submitted verbally. The motion to accept was made and seconded. The report was approved.
Membership and Marketing Committee:
We have a new program brochure that Reaona will be working on for us.
We will be contacting other district libraries and nonprofit groups that we feel can assist our membership and enhance our events as time permits. For now through the October conference the committee will be focusing efforts on promoting the Kansas Authors Club Convention and fund raising for that event.
Ruth provided a tutorial to help all KAC district 1 members access the online feed and notifications for all State KAC website information. This is a regular news feed that emails KAC information and keeps members aware of the happenings and writing opportunities available. YOU want to be on this feed!
Go to the Kansas Authors, website. click the tab in the left column that says New/for all members: then click the tab that says RSS; fill in your email information and check subscribe. I recommend doing this immediately in order to see the feed.
Max and Jan will be offering a beginning writer’s workshop at the Oskaloosa Library from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. the morning of May 21. Members want us to continue outreach to more libraries and other entities. If this goes well, we may want to prepare several workshops to share online.
Convention Update:
A state KAC meeting is scheduled for April 24th to which we are all invited. Watch for an email link. Further convention plans will be discussed there.
There have been several donations, The state Board is planning to assist with technical costs for a hybrid conference with in-person and online availability.
Fred has worked with a vendor to obtain bags for convention goodie bags.
We will be needing volunteers, so please plan to help. .
Up coming programs include: The June speaker is Craig Battrick on audio book narration. The July Speaker, Thea Rademacker, will address us on copyright issues on July 17th.
Our next meeting is scheduled via ZOOM on June 19 at 1:00 pm. Be on the watch for that Zoom link in your e-mail. Please be checking online at Kansas Authors Club to review KAC Announcements and district news, links, etc. Our Newsletter is really looking nice!
