Welcome from President Spry.
Program by Ruth Maus on the online application SUBMITTABLE.
This program will be on our Youtube channel. Look for the email link. What is it? It is an online tracking spreadsheet that helps authors and contest entities make and keep track of submissions to publishers and for contests, It flexibility permits authors and artists to submit and manipulate all the information about their submissions. Ruth prepared and showed a PowerPoint presentation and also went online showing an actual user’s page and how the various fields can be manipulated to ease an author’s ability to submit entries and find both contests and publishers seeking author articles, poems, works of art and so forth. The system appeared easy to use and should spur authors to submit and succeed. Thank you Ruth for teaching us about a new system most of us should be using. If you missed the presentation check it out on the forthcoming Youtube link.
Business Meeting
The Secretary’s report was submitted by Max Dunavan and entered on both the web page and in the monthly newsletter. The motion to accept was made by Barbara Waterman Peters and seconded by Carol Yoho. The minutes were approved.
The Treasurer’s report was submitted and entered on the web page and was available on the monthly newsletter. The motion to accept was made by Max Dunavan and seconded by Ruth Maus. The minutes were approved.
Membership and Marketing Committee: Max gave a report on the partnering activities as follows.
At this point we have added six partners. Arts Connect, and the following city libraries Atchison, Hiawatha, Holton, Oskaloosa, and Topeka.
Four of them are able to act as satellite host sites for our Zoom meetings.
6 will write letters of support for grants we apply for.
6 will share our applications for membership and help connect the KAC to potential members.
We have a new program brochure that Reaona will be working on for us.
In return we are identifying these as as non-profit partners. They get a paragraph in our newsletter if, they want it, will be identified as partners on our website and in the annual directory, and we will share their web link, name address and contact information. Their paragraphs will be brief and limited to helping them market their special program thrusts.
The Atchison library will daily run our logo and contact information on their library monitor with other local announcements.
The Oskaloosa library will be unable to act as a satellite host as they close at noon on Saturdays. We are considering a strategy that will permit them to attend.
We will be contacting other district libraries and nonprofit groups that we feel can assist our membership and enhance our events as time permits. We have a couple ideas about for profit sponsoring entities as well. If you have ideas about non profit or for profit partners, please let the marketing committee members know. (100% of fees from for profit partners go into our treasury to help fund conventions, speakers, and other initiatives we might like to fund for our members.
We are spending some effort to get the word about KACT out there within our district hoping for additional members and to serve Kansas Authors.
Max and Jan will be offering a beginning writer’s workshop at the Oskaloosa Library drom 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. the morning of May 21st. Members want us to continue outreach more libraries and other entities.
Resuming meetings at the library?: If the SN County Covid statistics improve should we resume an in person meeting format? Anne provided a survey to determine an interest in resuming in person with zoom participation: The library has offered two potential meeting rooms that would have the availability to do both an in person and joint ZOOM meeting. Members present participated in a survey and the results were:
64% desired to resume in-person meetings with zoom availability,9% were not desiring a return to in person meetings at this time, and 27% were unsure.
Convention Update:
At this point no one is doing fund raising for the 2021 convention costs.
Duane Johnson has been in communication with the CyTech provider who advises of significant flexibility in Youtube, Zoom, and live streaming relative to the convention’s needs and the spaces we desire to use.
We discussed the need to make a decision about whether the Topeka 2021 Convention planning team should make a decision about whether to proceed with a hybrid model or to select an all online program model. Some were in favor of an early May decision, others thought late June or July would be soon enough. It seemed that the late June time frame was preferred by most.
Early-bird registrations are likely to begin in July.
Upcoming programs include: The July Speaker, Thea Rademacher, will address us on copyright issues on July 17th. In May Rosie and Steve Williams will be speaking on the pitfalls of co-authoring. The Williamses will also be convention speakers where they will discuss writing as method in overcoming hardships.
Our next meeting is scheduled via ZOOM on May 15 at 1:00 pm. Be on the watch for that Zoom link in your e-mail. Please be checking online at Topeka Authors to review KAC Announcements and there will always be links and our newsletter available. Out Newsletter is really looking nice!
