Welcome from President Spry and a participant roll call identifying the types of writing attendees primarily pursue. Those were as following. Poetry , creative fiction, creative nonfiction, marketing materials, press releases, brochures, history, memoirs, and performance poetry.
Program
Andy Farkas from Washburn University joined District One Kansas Authors today to discuss twelve different topics for beginning and experienced writers. That presentation was recorded and the link can be found on the district Facebook page. His topics included beginning writer mistakes and the need to listen and revise. He suggested laying the work aside for a period and returning to review and revise. He discussed dialogue as opposed to narrative insights and ways to clarify that paragraphs are dialogue when intended. Andy provided information on the use of prologue and the importance of setting the scene wherever a change is needed. He highlighted the use of the narrator in fiction and identified that the narrator does have personality and a character. He added information on clarifying and avoiding some wording that tends to let readers feel they can skip over important passages. Andy advises that we should expect the readers to actually do some of the work in interpreting the story or even learning more to bring out the author’s storyline.
Andy addressed many questions from the author’s group on books recommended for beginning writers, and topics such as flashbacks, outlines, tools of writing, submitting writing to publishers, bouncing between writings, and more. Please see the video.
