--from Janet Stotts, 2019 District 1 President:
Well, we all knew summer was coming. It certainly is here! The weather will be hot, and our program will be just as hot.
Our July meeting is Saturday, July 20 in the Hughes Room of the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library. We will bring our lunches from the Millennium Café upstairs and chat until the business meeting begins at 12:15 pm.
As part of the business meeting, Matt Spezia, my slam poetry mentor, will tell us about a new stream of funding available through the Poetry for Personal Power (3P). This is grant funding for the arts, not just poetry. It offers many exciting ways to expand our programs and our search for somewhere to sell books. At the conclusion of the presentation, we will vote on whether to accept this grant offering. And, if we are lucky, we might be able to get Matt to give us one of his latest slams.
Next month, on Aug. 17th, is the Local Writers Workshop at the library. I encourage everyone to attend. Kansas Authors Club District 1 is sponsoring Dr. Andy Farkas’ workshop on "Flash Fiction" starting at 1:30 pm, and we will have a brief business meeting following his presentation.
Doors open for the library's workshop at 8:30 am for sign in and refreshments. The workshop will run from 9 am-2:30 pm. Lunch is on your own 12:30-1:30 pm.
State President Ronda Miller wants me to remind you that the early-bird registration for the exciting Kansas Authors Club Convention in Wichita ends Aug. 1st.
I hope someone has stepped up to meet our need for a new secretary. This is an essential member of our team.
See you next Saturday! --Jan Stotts
